Lake Taupo
From clear blue lakes to towering Vocanoes and roaring
water falls, this region has something for everyone.
Taupo (population 22,000) is situated on the north-eastern shore of
New Zealand's biggest Lake, Lake Taupo. Lake
Taupo is internationally recognised for its great fishing (Rainbow
Trout).
Wairakei (10 km north) is an active geothermal area.
The energy is harnessed and used to generate electricity at the Wairakei
Geothermal Power Station. The nearby Wairakei Park is well worth a
visit. See bubbling mud pools at the 'Craters of the Moon thermal
area' and also the mighty Huka Falls.
Tongariro National Park

Located South of Lake Taupo, the Tongariro
National Park is host to a large area of past and present volcanic
activity. Standing at 2800m (8500ft), Mount
Ruapehu is the tallest and most imposing volcano - still active
today.
Make sure you bring your walking boots because the region offers some
incredible walks - one of the most popular is the Tongariro crossing
(a full day hike through some of the most scenic and volcanically
active areas of the park).
As well as hiking, the mountain also offers great skiing.
