Mount Taranaki
Mount Taranaki (located just south of New Plymouth)
is the region's most famous landmark. Standing at over 2500 metres
tall and snow covered most of the year, it bears a striking resemblance
to Japan's Mt Fuji.
There are many excellent short and long distance walks around and
to the top of this impressive mountain.
If you are a keen beach-goer or surfer, the Fitzroy, back and Okato
beaches are excellent places to go to.
Wanganui
Wanganui city (42,000) is located approximately
2 hours south of New Plymouth and lies at the mouth of New Zealand's
longest navigable river, the majestic Whanganui.
Manawatu
Palmerston North (pop. 76,000) is one of the country's
most populated provincial centres and is home to New Zealand's largest
agricultural university, Massey University.
Rangitikei
The district of Rangitikei is dominated by the Rangitikei
river, which runs through deep gorges and white mudstone cliffs from
the Kaimanawa ranges to the Tasman sea.
White water rafting, kayaking, fishing and boating are very popular
and offer you a great way to experience this impressive river.
